People who encounter Jesus for the first time in the first 4 chapters of Mark encounter someone incredible. Mark shows in chapters 1-3 that Jesus has power and authority over diseases and over death and over demons, over sin, over sickness, and over Satan himself. Then Mark shows that in His teaching, Jesus won’t let readers dismiss Him as a mere teacher of religion. And Mark is just getting started. Things come to a head for Jesus’ disciples in Mark 4:41, as they see Jesus having power and authority over Creation itself, and they ask the granddaddy of all questions: “Who then is this?” This is the same question Mark wants his readers to be asking.
